Mindfulness and Creativity: A Balancing Act with the Brain

My first professional experience as an art therapist was completing my graduate school internship at Compassion Road Academy, an alternative school here in Denver. It was incredibly inspiring to work with these students to provide art therapeutic services as an art therapist that they might not otherwise have access to. When I created Violet Hive Art and mobile programming for schools, it was with this experience in mind.

In 2017, we were able to go back to Compassion Road as an official Community Partner of Denver Public Schools. We focused on traditional fiber arts like embroidery with a nontraitional take of painting on fabric, creating dreamcatchers and meditation sticks. Our work helped the students connect their bodies to the earth by using repetitive movements that aid in self-regulation. It was inspiring to see the growth in these students as we progressed through our curriculum.

This story and accompanying video does a great job spotlighting the benefits of art therapy in schools.

Do good and be well,
